The only people more sympathetic than Apple’s struggling AI division are Apple’s users who have not had the promised updates to Siri. After over a year of talking about their own inhouse trained models, Apple announced that they are picking Google’s Gemini to power Siri, with a security layer still provided by Apple Private Cloud Compute. A nice win for Google and a comparative loss for OpenAI, which Apple initially partnered with for their AI launch but is increasingly having rumors of their consumer hardware device shipping this year, which may have factored into the decision.
